Petersen and M'Kress meet on the way to their separate primitive weapon combat programmes on the planetside holodecks. They decide to fight each other instead of the computer-generated foes - Petersen with a Viking longsword, M'Kress with a Klingon Bat'leh. M'Kress decisively defeats Petersen three times, and Petersen gets really embarrassed.
Governor O'Reilley enlists the Klingon ship of Tharesk's house to protect New Lhasa. He tries to hire the Koloth, but the price demanded by the ship's negotiator is too high.
Munarch also decides to accept large numbers of refugees from the Dominion war. In a reception for their civil leaders, the Starfleet officers who fought in the defense of Nelor IV ("And all the Men and Women merely Players") meet the facilitator of Nelor IV again - and they discover that two weeks after the battle, the planet fell to a second Dominion assault. Lyranna, unable to tolerate crowds because of her own New Lhasa Syndrome, retreats from the gathering, where Petersen finds her.
