313 Custody

Kath’Lar’s mother, Mara gets word from Qo’noS that House Martok has discovered a plot by Torel of House Duras against Chancellor Gowron. House Martok is proposing that all members of House Duras be discommendated.

Dr Torellan is informed that, a Deltan security officer named Kayon has been attacked in the street and is in the Schweitzer Memorial hospital. She liaises with the hospital staff and informs Veltr’a who visits Kayon to get the details of the attack. A Klingon attacked him and a holofit image of his attacker reminds Veltr’a of K’ral. Seeking a possible motive Veltr’a asks Kayon to confirm the rumour that he once had a relationship with Kath’Lar. Kayon is evasive but does eventually confirm the rumours.

Kath’Lar receives a formal challenge from K’ral for custody of their daughter Valkris.

Veltr’a visits Kath’Lar. She tells him about the custody challenge and he tells her that K’ral is a suspect in the attack on Kayon suggesting that it was motivated by jealousy and revenge. They visit Horah Morash and ask if he can recommend a good Lawyer for Kath’Lar. Loras tells the Captain of his suspicion of K’ral’s involvement in the attack on Kayon.

Dr Torellan detects traces of Klingon DNA on Kayon from the attack. She sends the information to Loras and starts searching through the civilian security databases for a match.

Loras visits Valkris in an attempt to get a sample of her DNA in order to extrapolate K’ral’s DNA. She is uncooperative but he gets a sample of her hair from her hairbrush. The sample does not show any correlation with the traces from Kayon. Loras tells Kath’Lar that the DNA traces do not match. This may indicate that it was not K’ral who attacked Valkris or that Valkris is not K’ral’s daughter.

Veltr’a leads a civilian security team to House K’ral in order to arrest K’ral. K’ral attacks him sending Loras flying across the room. Veltr’a uses his phaser to stun K’ral. Thelor, the house Mauro advisor tries to calm the situation to no avail. The civilian security officers take cover. Veltr’a calls for a beam out but the transported technician is unable to get a lock. Thelor is informed that the verteron field has been activated to block their phasers. Thelor offers to let Loras leave without K’ral. He refuses and the situation deteriorates.

Veltr’a wakes up in the hospital and is unhappy that K’ral has not been incarcerated. The civilian security scans of K’ral show a match with the traces from Kayon’s assailant. K’ral is taken into custody. Kath’lar visits Loras and is disgusted at the cowardice shown by the Klingons. She is glad to hear that Valkris is not K'ral's daughter, as it will nullify the custody claim. She visits K’ral in jail and gloats. He flies into a rage shouting “Duras” after her as she leaves.

Loras taunts K’ral who claims Loras is without honour. Loras indicates that he will accept K’ral challenge once he is released.

A couple of days later Mara tells Kath’Lar that she and Valkris are being named as members of House Duras. She blames K’ral fro telling them but is not really worried about the discommendation, as she does not care what the Klingons think about her. Loras visits her and tells her about the honour duel with K’ral. She offers to help him train.
