315 We owe Respect to the Living

The episode opens with Veltr’a and Kath’Lar sparring in preparation for Veltr’a’s honour duel with K’ral. Kath’Lar is considerably more skilled than Veltr’a and convincingly defeats Veltr’a each time. Their practice by Horah-Morash's summons.

The Captain informs the senior officers and Dr Torellan that he has received a briefing from Starfleet intelligence. The Motosian government - George Petersen's homeworld - has placed a bounty on Petersen’s head. Petersen is currently on a walking holiday and cannot be contacted.

Veltr’a puts together an away team to find Petersen and they take a shuttle to the area to scan for him. The Captain contacts Lyranna and asks if she has any knowledge of Petersen’s whereabouts. She doesn’t but mentions that her staff had reported and repelled an unwanted visit. She offers to help look for him, joining the away team on the Brahmaputra.

The scans cannot find Petersen but do locate a shuttle within the search area. Mariella recognizes it as her old ship from her days in the DMZ. Scans of the shuttle show signs of an old Dominion attack but none of life. The Brahmaputra lands, and a large party heads off towards the shuttle whilst some scientific staff try to discover why the sensors are occluded.

Mariella's command codes still open the door. Its environmental systems have been heavily reconfigured and additional systems display data in Breen.

Kayon notices smoke rising on the horizon and the team investigates. Shar detects a life sign coming from over the ridge and Veltr’a takes Kayon and goes to investigate whilst the rest of the team scans. They find a Breen with a coffin sized anti-grav pod. Veltr’a stuns the Breen and checks the pod. He finds Petersen inside.

Scans show that he was killed by electrocution almost an hour previously. When the Breen recovers from the stun Loras interrogates him. The Breen claims to be a scientist and that he tried to rescue Petersen from the people who attacked him.

Veltr’a orders the Brahmaputra to investigate the source of the fire. Scans of the intensity of the dampening field locate its source close to the fire and the generator is neutralized. Scans show two survivors, a Motosian and a human woman who is identified and Felan, the escaped Destiny agent who had seriously attacked Petersen several months before. Veltr’a stuns the Felan and they head back to Po'rama with their prisoners and Petersen’s corpse.

The Motosian claims, foolishly, to be a lawfully recognized bounty hunter - Motos uses bounty hunters extensively, but there is no such thing on New Lhasa. He blames Felan for killing Petersen. An autopsy confirms that Petersen died of electrocution but reveals a recent infestation of New Lhasa Syndrome. Interrogation and investigations at the scene reveal that the campsite belonged to a gathering of the Destiny movement, meeting with Petersen. The bounty hunters interrupted the meeting with Petersen, for the Destiny movement to loudly blame Petersen for leading the hunters to them ... and Felan again attacked George Petersen, this time fatally.

There is a memorial service for Petersen.

The episode title is a Voltaire quote.
