There is a collision in space between a smaller vessel and a passenger shuttle. Starfleet is short of medics, and sends out a call for additional personnel. Dr. Kal Orioli, the former Imzadi of Lyranna Quayn who featured in the eponymous episode, is on the passenger shuttle and assists.

Despite his help, there are three casulaties, one of them a messenger who dies trying to contact a Jerrel Gav'reme.

Somehow, Kal is around when Ashok sees the messenger.

Kal Orioli confronts Lyranna with what he has sensed - that Ashok recognised the messenger killed in the crash. Lyranna discusses this with Ashok. Starfleet broadcast an appeal for the Jerrel Gav'reme the messenger was trying to find.

Lyranna and Ashok have a heated discussion about confidentiality. Kal Orioli tells what he knows to Veltr'a. Loras Veltr'a summons Lyranna to his office, but Lyranna admits nothing. Loras goes to seek Ashok, who finally admits to being Jerrel Gav'reme, but refuses Loras' help.

Ashok is attacked, and nearly killed, by a Lecthar. When his mother sends him a secret message, saying that his father has died and invitating him to join her and fight for her side in an internicine war of succession in his Orion house, he tells his wife he has no alternative but to go.

A Lecthar is an species with an agressive telepathic attack. They featured on DS9.
