"The best thing in the galaxy is a good friend. The next best is a good enemy." - Traditional Gorn Proverb

Loras Veltr’a visits the monastery wanting to learn their ways. He was impressed by the fighting skills and speed of Rimshi. The lead teacher calls Rimshi a good student and a friend but says he abandoned his place for the short route of the destiny movement. They are pleased to teach Veltr ’a and point him towards a schedule of classes. Veltr’a signs up for lessons.

There is an officers meeting to discuss the Gorn/Tholian hostilities. The Gorn are reclaiming their systems and the Federation have received complaints form Tzadoc the Tholian Ambassador that the Varex are using a base within the UFP space. The options under discussion are either asking the Varex to move or making a diplomatic objection when the Tholians attack the base. Veltr’a suggests investigating the area and speaking to the Varex if they are present.

They also discuss the communiqué which Governor Heart has received from Klingon House Mauro offering to aid in the defense of New Lhasa. The expectation is that they a joint New Lhasan/Klingon council to oversee this defense force. The Governor has misgivings. Veltr’a says that House Mauro are manipulative and believes that the council will involve too much talking. He suggests using this alliance to get a Klingon ship to investigate the Varex base as the Stevenson is still being repaired, but the only ship near enough is the Koloth under the command of K’ral, so they use a runabout. Veltr’a and Captain Horah-Morash decide to go with the team that visits the Varex.

Veltr’a visits Lyranna to ask if she would like to be part of the mission to the Varex. He finds Lyranna using Klingon calisthenics in the holodeck. Veltr’a tries not to disturb her. He hears a noise behind him and attacks, injuring Coraven, Lyranna’s Betazoid waitress. Lyranna refuses to return and continues the Holodeck program. Veltr’a persists and gets in the way of the combat by attacking the holographic adversary. Lyranna and Veltr’a defeat the creatures and face each other defensively. Lyranna insists that she is not going and Veltr’a finally accepts this and leaves.

Lyranna tells the captain of Veltr’a’s request, because he told her she would not be bothered with requests to join missions. The Captain reprimands Loras. Lyranna speaks to Veltr’a over communicators about the attack on Coraven and asks him to stay away. He says that he will send an apology and hopes that they can remain friends. He offers to be a sparring partner.

A few days later the runabout USS Brahmaputra approaches the Varex base. Veltr’a detects a Gorn ship that had been using the electrical field of the Zhayi systems star to conceal themselves from detection. Captain Horah-Morash hails them. They claim to be on a diplomatic mission to visit the Varex. Dr Torellan senses that they are hiding something. Loras observes that they would not be able to fight the Gorn ship with just the runabout.

The Captain wants to convince the Varex to move to somewhere where the Tholians cannot find them. He orders Shar and Selar to look for a hiding place for the Varex within Tholian space. There is a diplomatic lunch with the Varex and the Gorn. One of the Gorn speaks with Veltr’a and compliments him for Cestus III. She calls him a good enemy. A group of Varex children seem fascinated by Dr Torellan. The Varex are traders and are fighting a guerilla war. The Captain is having a hard time convincing them to move.

Veltr’a notices that some of the Varex have Gorn side arms. He later notices other Gorn artifacts. He tries to scan them and is asked to stop by the Varex. He tells the Captain that they are of Gorn origin.

Selar and Shar find somewhere for the Varex to move to and the Captain succeeds in convincing the Varex to move. There is a Gorn supply line to the Varex but they are not present at Zhayi when the Tholian force arrives.

Back on New Lhasa Veltr’a attends classes at the monastery. He finds the classes basic and enquires after more advanced classes, He is told to walk before he can run, and reluctantly agrees.
